Drive By Truckers
The Dirty South
(New West)
Southern rock is alive and well with the golden boys of indie rock, Drive By Truckers. Don’t Believe Me? Put on The Dirty South and the first track “Where The Devil Don’t Stay” will immediately paint a picture of the Charlie Daniels Band. (The song would be peferct for Daniels.) The Truckers have been on a real roll since Southern Rock Opera, and this may be their best yet.
“Tornadoes” is a song any Northern Alabama resident can identify with. The Truckers continue to pay homage to their Southern Roots with excellent songs like “The Day John Henry Died,” “Lookout Mountain,” and “The Boys From Alabam,” a tale involving Sheriff Buford Pusser (The hero of the movie “Walking Tall”) and some other fine lawmen.
“Carl Perkins’ Cadillac” rings out with Byrds style guitars and as usual, excellent lyrics about Sun Records and Sam Phillips.” “Danko/Manuel” is a song about two former members of The Band, RickDanko and Richard Manuel, and “The Buford Stick” goes in depth with the legend of the aforementioned law man Buford Pusser.
Drive By Truckers may call it The Dirty South, but there’s no doubt they also call it home.
